Som'n about the "so-called" pirates, they call themselves a voluntary coast guard in Somalia, which may be more apt.
I like Ed Morrissey's take as he beclowns the Permed One...
[Our] own Coast Guard routinely steals ships, shoots crew members, and demands millions in ransoms, right?

Crime on water isn't even piracy in my boat. It's just crime. Piracy was about state sponsored mucking about with your enemies commerce.

I think the state-sponsored version was "privateer," and supposedly only during war; i.e.: they were Private Military Contractors. Of course, everyone else in opposition to that letter of marque would consider them pirates. Some things never change...
