Breakfast Granola for 4/16/10

I know plenty about Macs, all the way down to some obscure tricks and keyboard shortcuts, but some of them are rarely used and need to be refreshed with visits to the Help menu or Google searches. However, this trick from Lifehacker is one I hadn't heard, yet something I'd so commonly use that I'm surprised it's not better documented:
Fine tune volume in OS X by holding down Alt(Option)+Shift then pressing the volume adjuster buttons. Also if you hit the volume down button till it shows the mute sign then hit the mute key it will play very quietly.

Breakfast Granola for 1/28/10

So, the iPad is announced. Macevangelist though I may be, I'm not seeing the spark in an enlarged iPhone. Better, I think, would've been a shrunken MacBook with some iPhone capabilities. Same form factor by size and with touchscreen, same WiFi and/or 3G, but with stripped-down laptop capabilities, perhaps with a stripped-down Mac OS.

But what do I know, right? I'm no Steve Jobs.

What I do know is that Alena Savostikova is a Mac Chick that I located on Macenstein, and it looks like she has a MacBook of 2008-ish or so vintage. Now we're getting somewhere...

Chocolate vs. Vanilla, Take 2

I've touched on Mac vs. PC previously with little to no ire, but I call bullshit on Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner when he claims that Microsoft was asked by Apple to pull 'Laptop Hunter' ads suggesting Apple computers were expensive.
"We're just going to keep running them and running them and running them," Turner said during a Wednesday address to Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference 2009.

Turner said the call from Apple took place two weeks ago, and the attorneys asked that the company no longer run the ads because the company had "lowered our prices."

[...]

An Apple spokesman had no immediate comment.
Mac-evangelist that I am, I'll take a three-round burst at Turner by saying 1) I don't believe you, 2) run those ads all you want because they don't speak to what headaches and heartbreaks lie in store for the price, and 3) Apple at least took a step in lowering prices, so I call upon Microsoft to do likewise on their part by increasing quality.

Or "lowering suck," if you will.

The Stack of Stuff (for Mac)

Lifehacker is always good for useful apps, and they've collected a bunch into one spot: Lifehacker Pack 2009: Our List of Essential Free Mac Downloads.

"What about Windows?" you might be asking. Well, what about 'em?

And kick Bill Gates for me when you see him.

Chocolate vs. Vanilla?

I've seen the commercials where some chick goes to a big-box store and whines about how much Macs cost, then squeals at how much cheaper her PC was. Yippee!

Then there's this from Cnet...
[Responding to this ad campaign], Apple notes that "millions of people have switched to Mac because they love the security, stability, and power that comes with world-class hardware and amazing software that just works, right out of the box."

It puts its own spin on the price issue.

"A PC is no bargain when it doesn't do what you want," Apple said.
I co-sign that statement, and make no bones about it: I love my Mac. However, the Mine is full of PCs -- I'm posting this via one -- and I admit that they have their place.

My personal problem with PCs has been the odd learning curve for me; short version: they tend NOT to act they way I think they should. So, are PCs better because they're cheaper? Not to me, if only because I've had to learn how to use it...to learn how to use it. This is usually thanks to strange and uncommon minutiae that bring things to a screeching, senseless halt. On every Mac I've had, I've typically been able to jump in with both feet and do what I want, and even in my darkest moments, I've still been able to work my way through the obstacle.

But your mileage may vary, and that's the whole point of this post.
