Breakfast Granola for 5/10/11

Jalopnik has the accurate take on this NSFW-language Youtube clip:
Most of you are probably sane, normal people capable of reacting normally to [encountering a police shootout]. But just in case here's a lot of things [these white dudebros] did wrong:

  • Don't drive towards police officers with guns drawn
  • Don't think that by crouching down you're safe
  • Don't tell your friend to "chill"
  • Don't listen to Pearl Jam when you might die
  • When the police get in their cars, it's probably time to go
  • Once you decide to move away don't stop again
  • When the cops are hiding, you should be hiding
  • Don't videotape yourself doing any of this

And there ends today's obvious lesson.

Oh, Pearl Jam-listening white folks, you so crazy!

Breakfast Granola for 5/2/11

First, happy birthday to me!

Second, this is the last we'll hear from Osama bin Laden:
Osama bin Laden, the face of global terrorism and architect of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, was killed in a firefight with elite American forces Monday, then quickly buried at sea in a stunning finale to a furtive decade on the run.

Long believed to be hiding in caves, bin Laden was tracked down in a costly, custom-built hideout not far from a Pakistani military academy.

[....]

The military operation took mere minutes, and there were no U.S. casualties.

U.S. helicopters ferried troops from Navy SEAL Team Six, a top military counter-terrorism unit, into the compound identified by the CIA as bin Laden's hideout — and back out again in less than 40 minutes. Bin Laden was shot in the head, officials said, after he and his bodyguards resisted the assault.

Three adult males were also killed in the raid, including one of bin Laden's sons, whom officials did not name. One of bin Laden's sons, Hamza, is a senior member of al-Qaida. U.S. officials also said one woman was killed when she was used as a shield by a male combatant, and two other women were injured.
Third, "a costly, custom-built hideout not far from a Pakistani military academy"? Really, Pakistan? I believe you have some explaining to do.

And fourth, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

Workplace safety

The elevator is now making the worst grinding and screeching noises when reaching The Mine.

Nope, that doesn't sound unsafe at all.

So, I have this heat ray I call a "LASER"...

Time to use FRICKIN LASERS on some Somali pirates, via KATU:
A ship-based laser tested by the Navy's research arm could put the heat on Somali pirates.

The Navy for the first time last week successfully tested a solid-state high-energy laser from a ship. The beam, which was aimed at a boat moving through turbulent Pacific Ocean waters, set the target's engine on fire.

The Office of Naval Research says the laser traveled over "miles, not yards."

[....]

"You can use the laser to ward off an attack, or you can dial it down to a non-lethal level where it basically becomes a very bright light so they know they are being targeted," Michael Deitchman, the director of air warfare and weapons at the Office of Naval Research, said Wednesday.

In Soviet Russia, avalanche controls YOU!

"Avalanche control" is generally a technique whereby experts cause a series of small slides to prevent huge and dangerous ones. Keyword: GENERALLY.

However, when not-experts cause one large slide that becomes the huge and dangerous one, well... that's what these Russians in North Ossetia (aka: Outer Herpderpia) will demonstrate for you.

Listen for the ultimate in herp-derp: they're giggling as the avalanche is headed their way. I'd love to know what they're saying. I'm guessing either "Cannons are awesome" or "We're so boned!"

Elizabeth Taylor (1932 - 2011)

Elizabeth Taylor was one of the OG child stars. And, as you can see, she was also an OG hot piece/sex symbol. Her beauty would give most modern starlets a run for their money.

And her appetites? She was married eight times, to seven men; Richard Burton got two spins. So, posthumous high-five to Dick Burton!

And to Liz, sorry to see you go. A Hollywood Era is definitely gone.

R.I.P. Frank Frazetta

Now gone to be with his wife, Ellie, master artist Frank Frazetta passed yesterday, age 82.

The storyboard artist for the scifi and fantasy fantasies of my youth, his late, real life seemed -- unfortunately -- the stuff of nightmares:
The Pocono Record newspaper reported that by December of [the year his wife died, 2009], Frazetta was "suffering from dementia".

On December 9, 2009, Frazetta's son, Alfonso Frank Frazetta, 52, known as Frank Jr., was arrested for attempting to steal approximately 90 paintings from the Frazetta museum. He was accompanied by Frank Bush, 49, and Kevin Clement, 54. His wife, Lori Frazetta, told state police that Frank Jr. and Ellie had run the family business until Ellie's death, when infighting over the paintings began. The son maintains he was trying to prevent the paintings from being sold, per the wishes of his father, whom he says had given him power of attorney over his estate. After siblings Billy Frazetta, Holly Frazetta Taylor, and Heidi Grabin filed a lawsuit against Frank Jr. in March 2010, claiming misappropriation of their father's work, which they said the artist had transferred to a company controlled by those three, the family issued a statement on April 23, 2010, that said, "all of the litigation surrounding his family and his art has been resolved. All of Frank's children will now be working together as a team to promote his ... collection of images...." The Monroe County district attorney later that day said he would drop theft and burglary charges against Frazetta Jr. at the request of family members.
I'm not sure who to treat as the villain in this, though I want to assume it was Lil Frank. Claiming power of attorney AND grabbing 90 paintings? Seems suspiciously like a dick-move.

Here's to hoping Big Frank's wishes -- that his museum paintings be preserved in situ, distributed to family and/or friends, selectively liquidated, or otherwise -- will be fully honored.
