Strangers

A song I hadn't yet heard from the inimitable Yoko Kanno, which makes sense because it's from the also inimitable, but very forgettable, Wolf's Rain. Beautiful soundtrack, weird anime.

On your marks

You may have seen her before, cosplaying as Pikachu. Wonder no more who she is; it's apparently Jessica Nigri, shown here in a bikini instead.

She's done a few others costumes, too, according to the gallery. Her Dark Magician Girl and Yoko Littner are passable, but then she's not thin enough to be Emma Frost, and she's not nearly busty enough to be Tsunade. I think the best in her repertoire that I've seen -- her physique and face are just right -- is Rikku.

She's no Gina Gatto, but she'll do on a weird Wednesday.

Pre-FAIL senses tingling!

CAUTION: FAIL IS IMMINENT!
Producer Jon Landau, who worked with James Cameron on Avatar, spilled new details about the duo's next franchise, based on scifi manga Battle Angel Alita. The movie will focus on the robot warrior Alita's early life among cyborg roller-gladiators.
Sorry, but I don't remember Gunm starting that way; I remember Dr. Ido finding her torso in The Junkyard under Tiphares. Then -- after some other, intervening cybernetic bodies -- she became a motorballer.

But then I've actually read some of the manga and seen some of the anime. For the love of Raptorjeebus, Landau and Cameron, why so FAILish?

Make way for more dead

From Anime News Network:
The listing for the March issue of Fujimi Shobo's Monthly Dragon Age magazine on the Seven Net Shopping website states that an anime adaptation of Daisuke Satō and Shoji Sato's Highschool of the Dead manga has been green-lit.
First, The Walking Dead, and now HOTD? WHAT. UP.

Breakfast Granola for 1/4/10

Welcome to the next decade, you damn dirty apes. Items of note:

1) Scotch goes with chocolate.
2) Drunk texting is easier than it seems.
3) There's supposed to be a live-action Yamato movie. Please don't suck.

Patlabor + Front Mission = MORAV?

Found this while wandering the intergoogles. The synopsis strikes me as a melange of anime/videogame plots -- chiefly Patlabor for its multipurpose "Labor" robots, and the Front Mission series for purpose-built "Wanzer" mil-bots and the geopolitics of their deployment -- plus others to a lesser extent, like Wolf Brigade for its alternate history of Japan during WW2.

Of note: Grant Imahara of Mythbusters fame is involved, and -- with this in mind -- Mine personnel, please observe the map of "Tangri" and take note of any similarities to realworld locations.

Today's best news so far

Kiss a live-action look at spectacularly dystopian future goodbye. The live action remake of manga classic Akira is dead. Sad: We so wanted to see The Capsules, or at least the jacket, in real life.
Sorry io9, but this is NOT sad news. All indications pointed to this project being a turd of EPIC FAIL.

For starters, the setting was going to be "Neo-New York" instead of "Neo-Tokyo" per the manga by Katsuhiro Otomo, which obviates a fair portion of the character and plot elements. Thus, by its now stillborn status, it becomes WIN.

If Hollyweird isn't willing to do it right, they shouldn't do it at all.

Pig flus + zombies + Battle Royale = Highschool Of The Dead

The illustrations by Shouji Sato were what originally caught my eye, and the more I saw Highschool Of The Dead, the more I wanted to learn about it.

If you can distill out the Japanese manga/anime hyperbole, it has interesting thoughts into how the general population, media, and public services might respond to open pandemic.

Of note: the 1918 "Spanish flu" pandemic (the prior instance of H1N1) gets mentioned in Chapter 2. In conjunction with how zombies happen, you know it'll be a supergood apocalypse.

Not so sure of the legality behind this -- although I don't know where a genuine translation can be obtained -- you can read the manga on One Manga.

Cosplay: You're doing it right!

When cosplay is bad, it can be awful, but when it's good, it can be great.

This particular portrayal of Street Fighter Cammy White is another one of those great instances.
